Iron ore pellets are small, hard, spherical agglomerates produced by mixing finely ground iron ore concentrate (fines) with a binder (like bentonite or organic material) and additives (like limestone or dolomite), rolling them into spheres (called green balls), and then hardening them at high temperatures (induration or firing).
Source: Iron ore concentrate, often derived from beneficiation of hematite or magnetite ores.
Gujarat, specifically the Kutch region, is noted for suppliers of bentonite (a key binder) and pelletization plants. Appearance: Uniform, near-spherical particles, typically dark reddish-brown to black depending on the iron oxide content.
Primary Use: High-quality raw material for the production of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)/Sponge Iron and as a charge material in a Blast Furnace (BF) for hot metal production.
Their uniform size and high strength improve gas flow and efficiency in the furnace.
| Parameter | Unit | Typical Value Range | Key Role/Notes |
| Total Iron (Fe) | % | 63.00 - 66.00 | The main value determinant; DR grade is often $66.5\%$ or higher. |
| Silica ($\text{SiO}_2$) | % | 2.00 - 5.00 max | Gangue material; lower is better to reduce slag. |
| Alumina ($\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3$) | % | 1.00 - 3.00 max | Gangue material; lower is better. |
| Silica + Alumina | % | 4.00 - 7.00 max | Combined gangue content. |
| Phosphorus (P) | % | 0.05 - 0.08 max | Deleterious element; affects steel quality (causes cold shortness). |
| Sulphur (S) | % |
