Iron ore pellets are small, hard, spherical agglomerates produced by mixing finely ground iron ore concentrate (fines) with a binder (like bentonite or organic material) and additives (like limestone or dolomite), rolling them into spheres (called green balls), and then hardening them at high temperatures (induration or firing).

  • Source: Iron ore concentrate, often derived from beneficiation of hematite or magnetite ores. Gujarat, specifically the Kutch region, is noted for suppliers of bentonite (a key binder) and pelletization plants.

  • Appearance: Uniform, near-spherical particles, typically dark reddish-brown to black depending on the iron oxide content.

  • Primary Use: High-quality raw material for the production of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)/Sponge Iron and as a charge material in a Blast Furnace (BF) for hot metal production. Their uniform size and high strength improve gas flow and efficiency in the furnace.
