Fluorspar powder is the powdered form of the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂).
In industry it is supplied in different grades - for example “metallurgical grade”, “acid grade”, etc.
Typical uses include:
As a flux in steelmaking and foundries to lower the melting point of slags and improve impurity removal.
In the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF) and other fluorine-chemicals (acid grade).
In glass, ceramics, welding electrodes, and other industrial contexts.
Physical appearance: usually a white or off-white crystalline powder (depending on impurities) with very low solubility in water.
| Parameter | Typical value / range |
|---|---|
| Chemical formula | CaF₂ |
| Purity (CaF₂ content) | • For acid grade: ≥ 95 % CaF₂ • For metallurgical grade: ~60–96 % CaF₂ according to some suppliers. |
| Impurity limits (SiO₂, CaCO₃ etc) | SiO₂ < 3 % |
| Moisture content | ≤ 0.5 % |
| Particle size / mesh | 200 mesh, 95.1 % passing f |
| Specific gravity (density) | ~3.18 (water =1) for typical CaF₂. |
| Melting point | ~1,420 °C (≈ 2,588 °F) |
| Boiling / decomposition temperature | ~2,500 °C (≈ 4,532 °F) for CaF₂ |
| Solubility in water | Practically insoluble; example: 0.0015 g per 100 mL |
