Bitumen (commonly called asphalt in American English) is a highly viscous, black, sticky, and thermoplastic substance, a residual product derived from the fractional distillation of crude petroleum. It is a complex mixture of high molecular weight hydrocarbons and is also found naturally in deposits (like the Pitch Lake in Trinidad).
Key Properties:
It is thermoplastic, meaning its stiffness (or viscosity) is highly dependent on temperature: it behaves like a viscous liquid at high temperatures and an elastic solid at low temperatures.
It is virtually impervious to water, making it an excellent waterproofing agent.
It exhibits strong adhesive properties, which makes it an ideal binder material.
Primary Use: Approximately 70% of the world's bitumen is used in road construction to produce asphalt concrete (often just called "asphalt"), where it acts as the binder to hold aggregate particles (gravel, sand) together.
Other Uses: It is also essential for waterproofing products like roofing felt, roof sealants, and various protective coatings.
| Property | Test Method | Unit | Requirement (VG-30 Grade) | Purpose/Significance |
| Absolute Viscosity at $60^{\circ}\text{C}$ | ASTM D2171 / IS 1206 | Poise | Min. 2400 | Key indicator for resistance to flow at high service temperatures. |
| Penetration at $25^{\circ}\text{C}$ | ASTM D5 / IS 1203 | 0.1 mm(dmm) | 50 - 70 | Measures the bitumen's hardness or consistency. Lower values mean harder bitumen. |
| Softening Point | ASTM D36 / IS 1205 | °C | {Min. 47 | The temperature at which the material reaches a specified degree of softness—a measure of its heat resistance. |
| Flash Point (Cleveland Open Cup) | ASTM D92 / IS 1209 | °C | Min. 220 | Safety indicator; the lowest temperature at which its vapors ignite temporarily. |
